An tí glas @ Leen Organics
An eco holiday cottage on an organic smallholding in rural Co Clare
Here at Leen Organics we have always innovated and done things a bit differently. When we first started growing organic vegetables here in 1997 “organic” was not a mainstream concept. Not happy with growing just organic vegetables we soon started producing organic eggs and were one of the first to do this. Likewise when we started selling from a small market stall we were pioneers, before it became fashionable. Having recently finished renovating our old farm house it is no surprise that we would be one of the first organic farms offering eco accommodation.
The resulting An ti glas or The Green House and Granary apartment are unique. The house originally built 200 years ago has been renovated using the best materials and finishes and now comprises a well-appointed comfortable holiday cottage full of character. It stands in its own grounds with access to the farm literally from the doorstep. Because of this we can promise you a unique holiday experience a place where you can get away from the hustle and the bustle of your busy life and enjoy clean air, tasty food, walks and relax in the retreat that is An Ti Glas.
If you are looking for nature and culture and a perfectly located touring centre An ti glas is for you. We are a short distance from the Burren National park now designated a UNESCO GeoPark also Bunratty Folk Park and Craggnowen are nearby. Also within close proximity is the wilderness of the Slieve Aughty Mountains. Further afield you have the world renowned Cliffs Of Moher and in the Shannon estuary Dolphinwatching. Closer to home there is Rathclooney bog which starts where the vegetable field ends and then Derrymore oak woods which are on the edge of in a Special area of Conservation a short stroll away.
We are currently working on two nature experiences that we hope will be certified by Ecotourism Ireland this summer. These are part of the conditions required for becoming associate members of the Burren Ecotourism Network of which we are currently aspirant members.
The experiences are as follows “Bugs, Butterflies and Bog experience”. This involves an investigative tour of Rathclooney bog looking at the flora and fauna the structure of the bog and mans impact upon these. It is suitable for people of all ages including children and involves short circular walk starting from An Ti Glas. This experience is open to guests staying but also day visitors but must be booked in advance.
The second experience is our take on voluntourism and we are offering a reduced price for a week’s stay in the Granary apartment in return for three mornings work on the farm. This will involve help with infrastructural projects and various jobs related to organic vegetable production.
We have recently introduced new packages for shorter stays either mid -week or for long weekends and four night packages between May and September in An ti glas are €280 for 4 nights and €200 in the Granary inclusive of heat, light and linen and a complimentary basket of our produce.
Guests who have stayed with us in the past always remark on the peaceful and relaxing nature of the area and the restorative powers of staying here. Come along and see for yourself you won’t be disappointed.
Catherine Mack writing in the Irish Times of July 3rd 2010 in her article headlined “Green shoots to warm the heart” wrote: “An Ti Glas is a typical stone dwelling with just the right palette of wild flowers to merit the title of chocolate box”
About us
We are a family of five with 3 teenage children; originally we lived in the house that is An ti glas. In 2007 we moved into a new house we built on another part of the farm. We are keen cyclists, walkers, gardeners and all the children are good hurlers (gaelic games). We have explored the local and wider hinterland over the years and this makes us well qualified to help you with itineraries for your visit. Days out, where to eat, attractions to visit and the good beaches to go to. We are also through the Ecotourism Network able to recommend walking guides, kayak/surf instructors etc. This is a complimentary service as we want to make sure you get the most from your stay in Co Clare and maybe one day come back and visit again.
